Wildflowers
My experience at one of Australia's largest native cut flower farms was a whirlwind of hard work and botanical wonder. My background in sustainable agriculture, plant production, and floristry converged beautifully as I found myself immersed in the magical world of Western Victoria's native flora and Australia’s most ornamental plant species.Surrounded by a breathtaking array of Banksias, Eucalypt foliage, Wattles, and Wax cultivars, as well as exotic Proteaceae species like Leucadendrons, Proteas, and Leucaspemums, I embraced the opportunity to learn about the storage and processing demands of a wide variety of native plant species, their propagation and ideal growing conditions. Whether I was buzzing around picking up product from different farms or bustling through truck days in the warehouse, my days were filled with the vibrant energy of the botanical world.
Working adjacent to the national park provided me with daily encounters with Australia's unique wildlife, from emu’s and kangaroo’s to Stumpy Tail Lizards, goannas, owls, giant moths and funny caterpillars. These interactions added an extra layer of magic to my daily routine, reinforcing my connection to the natural environment and reminding me of the importance of conservation and biodiversity.
Witnessing the mechanisms of a large team working together to cultivate and process native plants offered me valuable insights into the intricacies of agricultural diversification on arid soils and team management. My time at the native cut flower farm was not only an opportunity for personal and professional growth but also a testament to the resilience and beauty of Australia's native flora and fauna. My experience highlights the profound impact of combining passion with practical knowledge in the pursuit of sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. Through my work, I hope to continue to celebrate the magnificence of native plants and inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world.
Exploring Western Victoria’s mountain ranges is a great way to finish a day’s work.
